pinata card b

When was the last time you went to a children’s birthday party and didn’t see a piñata of some shape or another? They’re so readily available now, in every theme imaginable, it’s easy to see why they’ve become a party staple.

I’d love to say the piñata on this card was my idea, but no. When Bonnie Thurber Farley showed the Barnyard Babies stamp set at the catalog premiere in May, she pointed to this little guy and said, “I wonder how long before someone turns this one into a piñata?” One thing we stampers love to do is CASE (Copy and Share Everything!)

This has to be one of my favorite new stamp sets. Look at these adorable little critters! You can use them with the included sentiments, or not. I used the lamb on a previous post you can see here.

Okay, so I knew I wanted to make a piñata, but I needed a stick to whack at it. So I started shopping through the catalog. It’s a wonderful reference tool – I go through a few each year because I wear them out! I came upon the Simply Sports stamp set and saw the baseball player and a light bulb went on. I inked the stamp, masking the baseball, so the image would be only of the player and the bat. I decided to stamp this image in Bermuda Bay, the same color as the background, so it was a shadow. The piñata and tree limb take center stage in the foreground, both attached with Stampin’ Dimensionals. I cut the limb from Tip Top Taupe card stock, jaggedly cutting with my Paper Snips until it looked like a limb, or as close as I could approximate.

I stamped the donkey/burro with Tip Top Taupe ink on a piece of Cherry on Top DSP – piñatas are always colorful, right? I fussy cut it with my Paper Snips, cutting apart the hair of the mane and tail for added texture. I stamped just the face on a scrap of Tip Top Taupe card stock, fussy cut just the “snout,” and glued it onto the face. The eye is a Pearl Basic Jewel – I used a black Sharpie marker for the center.

The piñata is tied to the tree limb with a piece of Crushed Curry Baker’s Twine.

All the colors on this card come from the Cherry on Top DSP Stack.
